About the event
You are invited to "wander" through the streets of downtown Durham for its 3rd Friday Artwalk and be a flaneur/euse yourself. Inspired by her French literature background, artist Angela Ritter chose the view of the "flaneuse" for her watercolor pieces. While the more traditional role of the male flaneur is associated with aimless wandering, the female counterpart is transgressive. She dares to go out alone in spaces, claiming the freedom to choose her own path, to see and be seen on her own terms, and to disrupt the route and life she was expected to live. And, in a society that prizes productivity and wealth, to wander to capture life's beauty, flaner, is countercultural.
